Dear Patient,
|

I hope everyone has been
getting through this new
year. It is already June
and we are just about
halfway through 2009. Where
does time go anyway? I
think you will enjoy this
addition of our monthly
e-mail blast. Periodontal
disease is so insidious and
is one main reason we
emphasize regular cleanings
and examinations. We check
your periodontal condition
along with analysis of decay
and an oral cancer
examination during those
visits. So enjoy the read
and give us feedback to how
we are doing. We always
want to give you something
worthwhile to help make you
aware of new developments in
technology and educate you
about your oral health.
I also want to let you know
that I had another
opportunity to teach with
Newton Fahl, the
world-renowned cosmetic
dentist from Brazil, but I
did not have to travel to
Brazil to do it. We taught
at the world-renowned Pankey
Institute in Key Biscayne,
Florida. The Pankey
Institute is one of the
premier continuing education
facilities in the world.
Dentists from all over the
world come to learn at this
facility. We had dentists
from the United States,
Jamaica and Barbados. These
dentists spent the week
learning artistic composite
dentistry. It was a thrill
to be part of their learning
experience because I still
have fond memories of my
time learning at the
institute. I will be
traveling to Brazil in
February 2010 to assist in
another class.
I hope you all have a fun
and safe summer. I look
forward to hearing about all
your travels and family fun.
Enjoy!

Periodontal Disease |
 Periodontal
(gum) disease is a chronic
condition in which bacteria
attacks the gum tissue that
surrounds and supports your
tooth and if left untreated,
can lead to tooth loss. The
bacteria is found in plaque,
the sticky colorless film
that forms on your teeth.
When plaque is not removed,
it hardens and forms tartar
that brushing cannot clean.
This is why it is necessary
to see your hygienist for
regular cleanings and
periodontal examinations.
What causes periodontal
disease?
As mentioned above,
plaque is the primary cause
of gum disease but there
are other risk factors you
should be aware of.
- Smoking- Smoking
is one of the most signicant
risk factors. It does not
allow the gum tissue to
repair itself and in turn
lowers the success of
treatments.
- Hormonal
Changes-These
changes may make gums more
sensitive which allows
gingivitis to develop
easier.
- Diabetes and
Illnesses-
Diabetics are at higher risk
of developing infections,
which includes periodontal
disease. Other illnesses
like cancer or HIV interfere
with the immune system also
making you susceptible to
gum disease.
- Medications-
Some medications lessen the
flow of saliva, which has a
protective effect on teeth
and gums.
- Family History
Stages of
Periodontal Disease
There are three
stages of periodontal
disease.
Gingivitis: Earliest Stage
of Gum Disease
- Inflammation of the gums
- Plaque and tartar
build-up is present at the
gum line
- Gums become red, swollen
and bleed easily
- This stage of
periodontal disease is
reversible with daily
brushing, flossing and
regular cleanings by your
dental hygienist.
Periodontitis:
- Gums begin to pull away
from the teeth, forming
a pocket below the gum line
that traps food, bacteria
and plaque
- Inflammation and
bleeding of the gums
has worsened
- Plaque has spread to the
roots of your teeth
- Bad breath and bad taste
- Immediate treatment
can stop further damage and
tooth loss.
Advanced
Periodontitis:
- The fibers and bone that
support your teeth have been
destroyed causing your teeth
to be loose or move.
- Roots may be exposed and
are sensitive to hot and
cold.
- Pocket depths are in
excess of 6mm
- Chronic bad breath and
bad taste
- Loss of teeth and
bone loss will occur at this
stage.
Treatment
of Periodontal Disease
There are different
stages of treatment for
periodontal disease ranging
from deep cleanings to
medications and surgery.
The deep cleaning is also
called scaling and root
planing. During the
scaling, the tartar is
scraped from above and below
the gum line. The root
planing removes the rough
spots on the root of the
tooth where germs gather,
getting rid of the bacteria
that contributes to the
disease. If the patient is
at the later stages of
periodontal disease, Dr.
Saller may recommend a
periodontist whom
specializes in the treatment
of this disease.
There are different stages
of treatment for periodontal
disease but the best way to
prevent this disease is
keeping up a good daily
homecare routine and
regularly visiting Dr.
Saller's office for
cleanings and exams.

A Great Addition to Your
Daily Dental Care
|
Many of you own a Rota-dent
toothbrush but for those of you
who have not yet purchased one,
you may want to consider adding
this to your daily dental care.
The Rota-dent is an electric
toothbrush and is currently one
of the most effective at-home
oral hygiene instruments for
plaque removal, as confirmed in
university studies. Only the
Rota-dent toothbrush has
patented microfilament brush
tips designed to reach under the
gum line and in between the
teeth. The Rota-dent instrument
is powered by a rechargeable
battery and is dispensed in
dental offices only. Used on a
daily basis, the Rota-dent
instrument reduces plaque and
greatly improves oral health.
If you are interested in
purchasing the Rota-dent or have
questions, please feel free to
call our office at 321.259.0866
or ask your hygienist the next
time you are in for your
cleaning.
