How Stress Can
Affect Your Dental
Health
|
More and more
today, people
are feeling the
weight of the
world on their
shoulders and
the world around
us doesn't seem
to help lift
that load. The
news is
depressing, the
economy is
deteriorating
and bills keep
coming in. We
all know that
stress takes a
toll on our
body, mind and
spirit but many
of us don't
think about the
effects it can
have on our
dental health.
Do you ever
catch yourself
clenching or
grinding your
teeth? Or wake
up in the
morning with a
headache, ear
ache or jaw
pain? Many of
us
subconsciously
deal with our
stress through
our teeth.
Studies show
that most of us
will suffer from
teeth grinding,
more formally
known as Bruxism,
at some point in
our life and 25%
will have a
significant
problem with
Bruxism.
As mentioned
above, those who
grind their
teeth at night
during their
sleep may suffer
from headaches,
ear aches and
jaw pain. In
time you may
also experience
sensitivity to
hot and cold
fluids. Leaving
this problem
untreated can
have long term
effects that can
leave you with
chipped teeth,
tooth loss, gum
recession,
flattening of
the teeth and
pain. The good
news is that it
can be treated.
Night guards are
used to prevent
Bruxism. It is
worn at night
during your
sleep and it
provides instant
relief from
teeth grinding.
It is an easy,
pain free
treatment
process that
only requires
two visits to
the dentist
office: One for
impressions to
make the night
guard and the
second to
deliver and fit
the guard in
your mouth
properly. If
you suffer from
Bruxism or think
you may be
experiencing
these effects,
call our office
and we will
schedule an
appointment for
you to
personally speak
with Dr. Saller.

How to Manage Your
Stress
|

Adopting the right attitude
can convert a negative
stress into a positive
one.--Hans Seyle
We all have stress in our
lives and it is impossible
to completely eliminate all
of it but there are ways to
manage your stress. Stress
management is the ability to
maintain control when
situations, people and
events make excessive
demands. Here are ten tips
found on WebMD for reducing
stress:
- Keep a positive
attitude.
- Accept that there
are events you cannot
control.
- Be assertive instead
of aggressive. "Assert"
your feelings, opinions,
or beliefs instead of
becoming angry,
defensive or passive.
- Learn and practice
relaxation techniques.
- Exercise regularly.
Your body can fight
stress when it is better
fit.
- Eat healthy,
well-balanced meals.
- Get enough rest and
sleep. Your body needs
time to recover from
stressful events.
- Don't rely on
alcohol or drugs to
reduce stress.
- Seek out social
support.
- Learn to manage your
time more effectively.
If you practice these ten
tips, you will learn to
control your stress instead
of your stress controlling
you. Shift your
perspective. Rather than
seeing the stress as caving
in on you, imagine yourself
pushing it away and thinking
positively. There are
always two perspectives. So
ask yourself, "Am I looking
at the glass half full or
half empty?"
